Model turned musician Jagga is the alternative urban artist whose self-coined contagious beats have the music industry eating out the palm of his hand.

Describing his sound as "a bold, vibrant amalgamation of all the different things I'm into", Jagga's electronic fusion of grime and dub has caught the attention of international heavyweight producers of the moment, Hype and Zinc, Magnetic Man and Rusko, who he is supporting throughout the recently announced 2011 tour. If the music of this Hackney born, EMI signed solo artist doesn't grab you, his piercing green feline eyes and trademark afro just might. Previously featured as the face of numerous modelling campaigns, Jagga, a.k.a. Jez, released his debut single 'Modern day Romance' earlier this year and received an incredible amount of support via his myspace, including air time from Radio 1 and XFM. Remixes of the track have since flown in thick and fast. Allowing only two tracks from his forthcoming album to be made accessible, the anticipation and demand for more of Jagga's material is intense.

i-D Online caught up with the boy-band-boy-gone-solo ahead of his gig at XOYO to find out his plans for 2011.

i-D Online: Fenech Soler

Behind The Scenes with Fenech Soler

Forming five years ago, Fenech Soler are the four piece electronic pop project influencing commercial musical trends with their non-conformist attitude.

See more here

Clean-shaven, Northampton based boys Ben and Ross Duffy, Daniel Soler and Andrew Lindsey are Fenech Soler, the synth infused dance troupe transcending genres and redefining pop music for a new generation. Performing at SXSW earlier this year, Fenech Soler set a fresh president for the next decade's direction of club music. Embracing their mainstream roots, referencing the records and sounds of late 70s/early 80s artists, the band concentrates solely on making good music for crowds to get down to. Infectiously upbeat, the camaraderie between the boys is endearingly obvious within their music. Hotly tipped by Q, NME and The Guardian as the band to keep your eye on, Fenech Soler possess a certain quality which phonetically distinguishes what they do from any thing else around right now. Freshly signed to Warner's label B-Unique for the release of their debut album, the band are also headlining HMV's 'Next Big Thing', hosted at the Garage, London on 5 February.

i-D Online caught up with the band on the set of their latest music video.

i-conic: Kickers
At the footwear forefront for 40 years, Kickers is the iconic boot which transcends trends and time, championing a non-conformist attitude celebrated by generations past and present.

First conceived in 1968, when the streets of Paris were packed with rioting students, the Kickers boot was created for youth on the move. Fronting the movement, young radical Daniel Raufast first became inspired to create footwear that allowed the wearer to be free when he saw a poster for the musical Hair. Intrigued by the image, a scene packed full of kids wearing jeans, he developed a new shoe concept more compatible with the blue jean generation. Teaming up with designer Jacques Chevallereau they created the first jean boot. The boot was a very different type of shoe, most noticeably in its use of nubuck (softer than leather and available in numerous colours), its shape and its tough crepe soles made with natural rubber. The boot's eyelets, contrast stitching, panels and appliqués were all obvious references to the denim that clad youngsters here, there and everywhere. Within just one season, Kickers’ production soared from 300 to 12,000 pairs per month.

Throw forward four decades and Kickers' signature aesthetic has retained its bodacious brightness, popular with style icons from Elton John to Ian Brown, Mike Skinner to Jarvis Cocker and insider trendsetters Simon Foxton, Ray Petri and Henry Holland. Famously collaborating with rising talents since 2007, Kickers embraces each generation's ability to reinterpret what is iconic within each genre and moment.

In celebration of their 40th anniversary in 2011, the rainbow flavoured footwear line is taking to the streets to launch 'The Feelgood Revolution'. Keep one eye open on i-D online for more on the scheme soon!

i-D Online: Winters Bone Review

www.i-donline.com/i-spy/winters-bone

Winter's Bone
Quiet drama 'Winter's Bone' is the darkly unsettling cinematic thriller starring emphatic new actress Jennifer Lawrence, the talent to watch out for in 2011.

Set in the backwoods of Ozark, Missouri, this intelligent adaptation of Daniel Woodrell's original novel follows 17-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) as she desperately tries to locate her wayward father. Abandoning his poverty stricken family, the law-evading, nameless 'father' has left Ree to care for her younger brother and sister, alongside the mother, who has become catatonic as a result of serious depression. Bleak and unnerving, the film is a heart-wrenching tale of survival that intimately documents society's ability to simultaneously devastate and save.

Engaging her audience with hostile techniques, Lawrence's character is captivating. Struggling to support her family and refusing to accept defeat, she is forced to track down her father, after finding out he has promised the family home as bail bond. As time places increasing pressures on the isolated Ree, the events that follow uncover a disturbing, drug driven subculture, with her father at the center.

Now the official selection of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival's 'Dramatic Competition', amongst numerous other international nominations, Winter's Bone is the firm favourite for next year's Oscars. Defying genre specification, presenting a portrait of injustice and a love story which ends with savage loss and hope in equal measure, this is a film which demands understanding but offers no final resolution. A modern day masterpiece.

Winter's Bone is at cinemas now.

i-D Online: Jamie Woon

To see the behind the scene of Jamies Latest Music Video 'Night Air' click here

Singing sensation Jamie Woon is the captivating accoustic artist layering tender, soulful vocals over instrumental soundscapes that speak what the heart cannot tell.

Creating music which feels far beyond his 27 years, Jamie Woon is causing a massive stir on the music scene with his unique loop-pedalled blues infused sound. Releasing his debut track 'Wayfaring Stranger' earlier this year, Jamie has been quietly creating music for over ten years purely for his own pleasure. Subsequently discovered by major label Polydor, Jamie's spiritual music has the ability to transport listeners to ethereal heights, winning him favour amongst both mass crowds and niche critics. We caught up with Jamie on the set of his amazing first official music video for 'In The Night Air'.

What's happening? I’ve just put together a four piece band, and I’m doing my first headline tour in February and March. Getting on the road properly for the first time, and massively looking forward to it.

Who are your influences? Lewis Taylor, Burial, D’angelo, Portico Quartet, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Cinematic Orchestra and Thom Yorke.

What direction do you intend to take your unique and eclectic sound? In as many directions as possible at the same time. I’d like to do more collaborations and maybe some remixes. I really want to develop my songs with the band. Hopefully my music has improved with time and I have a better idea of my strengths and limitations than I did a year ago.

Do you remember the first time you sung in front of a crowd? I can’t actually remember, but I have some videos of me singing ‘Away in a Manger’ at a family party as a toddler. I’ve always loved singing and been encouraged to do it.

How emotionally involved are you with your material when performing? It varies from song to song and gig to gig, but it’s a great feeling to sing the right song at the right moment.

Are you in love right now? Yes. Smug as a bug in a rug.

How does your sound translate from the studio to the live stage? The sounds on my record are quite processed and I’m trying to find the best way of translating them live. It’s me and three other guys who are great musicians so that’s exactly the thing that I’m concentrating on at the moment.

What are your guilty pleasures? Taxis and takeaways.

Jamie is now working on his highly anticipated debut album, provisionally entited 'In The Middle' for release Spring 2011.

i-D Online: Cage Against The Machine

Supporting five worthy charities, Cage Against The Machine is the silent Christmas single loudly protesting against the corporate influences effecting the UK music industry.

This contemporary interpretation of John Cage's original orchestral arrangement 4'33 features an all-star choir, including musicians The Kooks, Billy Bragg, The Guillemots, Dan Le Sac, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, The Big Pink and Penguin Prison, amongst many others. Recorded in the prestigious depths of Soho's Dean Street Studios, the gathering assembled yesterday to stand in silence for the duration of the 4 minutes and 33 seconds whilst music painter Kilford translated the mood of the event onto canvas. Hoping to raise awareness for the The British Tinnitus Association, Sound and Music, Campaign Against Living Miserably, Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy and Youth Music, the recording will be available for download from 13 December with all profits divided equally between the five charities.

Chatting immediately after the event, singer Mr Hudson described what he heard: "It wasn't silence. There was the hum of a guitar amp; I applied the sustain pedal so any ambient sound in the room was ringing gently from within the piano. I was focusing on that. How do you even define silence?" Producer Paul Epworth was at the controls as the four-minute, second performance took place. Hopes are high for the Christmas number 1 spot, which would mean beating their X-factor endorsed competitors, and with 62,000 Facebook fans showing support, there's a good chance we'll be dancing to the sound of silence.

i-D Online caught up with Maverick Sabre, artist of the hour Kilford and The Kooks front man Luke Pritchard, all fresh from the studio.

In Conversation with Catfish

Evoking passionate reactions and controversial reviews Catfish is the American documentary providing unprecedented insight into the dysfunctional relationships formed within social networking forums.

New York based bothers Nev and Ariel Schulman, along with close friend Henry Joost set out to compile footage for a short film centered around an eight-year-old girl from Michigan called Abby Pierce. The film starts when Abby contacts Nev to express her admiration for his photography, mailing him a picture she has painted of an image he had published in the New York Times. The events that follow this initial correspondence go further than the boys could have ever imagined.

Speaking about the emotional journey the three encountered whilst filming the documentary, Nev commented "I never thought we were going to make a movie with this experience, I never expected the footage to get turned into a story that people would see but I think that it's because I was so candid and open, willing to reveal the most personal moments, that the film is successful and sends a message. People are able to associate with it and come away changed. It's an honour to be at the centre of something that is influencing people in such a positive way."

Creating a serious buzz at this year's Sundance film festival, Catfish is scheduled for release in the UK on 17 December. Nev, Ariel and Henry chatted to i-D Online ahead of the screening at the London Film Festival about the effects the film has had on their friendship.

i-ntroducing Anna Calvi: i-D Online

i-ntroducing Anna Calvi
Petite, pretty and softly spoken, Anna Calvi is the retiring romantic talent with an insatiable voice.

Too see the video click here

Famed for her mesmerising and powerful music, Anna creates understated soundscapes that layer her rich and dramatic vocals over an underlying orchestral tapestry of sound. Inspired by the French classical music of Ravel and Debussy, this young artist’s evocative style also references old school rock and roll, opera and folk. Inspired by her Father’s passion for music, Anna acquired a taste for strong female vocalists, which heavily influences the sound she has come to develop. Struggling with illness from an early age, Anna was subsequently forced to spend a considerable amount of time in isolation. This dark lonely period led to her creating the material, which is now prevalent on her debut, self-titled album. Speaking openly about her past struggles Anna commented, "my relationship with music is a world of my own creation that I escape into. I was always a dreamer. The early things stick with you”.

Describing her lyrics as being both autobiographical whilst simultaneously feeling fictitious in parts, the music of Anna Calvi delicately transports her listener to a dream-like state. Littered with flamenco inspired harmonies and grand crescendos Anna's fierce but surreal style is distinctive and contemporary. Playing her trademark Telecaster guitar alongside band members Mally Harpaz, (vintage harmonium) and Daniel Maiden-Wood (drums), the album was co-produced by Rob Ellis, best known for his work with PJ Harvey, Marianne Faithful and Placebo. Fresh from supporting Nick Cave's new rock project The Grinderman on tour Anna is now preparing to support Interpol at their 02 Academy gig this Tuesday. i-D Online caught up with this modern day folk star of the thinking people to chat about her hopes and fears for the forthcoming album.
