gone

And just like that it was gone. The way we laughed, him touching me, how it was. All gone. He’s found another one now I saw them together yesterday, he forgot quickly. He wants this one to lie her head on his chest, kiss his mouth and tell him he is hers, not mine, not anymore, l've gone. I left him and then he left me. I’m lying in bed by myself. He’s not here when l wake up in the morning, he’s not there to hold me when l’m sleeping at night and keep me all his, all of his. l am all of my own again. And then it happened.
To see them like that took my breath away, my heart fluttered and l stumbled. I wanted to hide and scream, for him to turn around and not see me. They didn’t look, they held hands, they laughed, young love and all l could do was to just steady myself. Where did all our love go, l don’t know. Does it all pour into her now, all of mine too? Because mine is still here, l can still see it and taste it everyday and l like it, l don’t want to give it to away just yet and l don’t want him too. I want to mourn it, I want to hold it here in me for the while til this sting fades, l cant and l won’t let it go. But now its been taken from me and l wasn’t ready.

my juliette lewis piece for platform

My knowledge of Juliette Lewis is limited. I’m fully aware that she has come to be regarded as one of the worlds most established laydees of rock royalty, but as far as l had been aware she was just some finger lickin vixen of kooky films past who dated Brad Pitt, for a bit. I knew she had been in a band too, a while back now….The Licks, but again my knowledge of this was pretty basic. I’d never really taken too much of an interest, then one night when l was working at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen (this was before l got fired) she strolled into the restaurant. I kinda gathered she was a pretty big deal by the amount of attention she commanded, so after watching her throw down an extra-ordinary set l took it upon myself to interview her. She was a very pleasant mild mannered lady, bit weird, but nice. Oh yeah, my boyfriend (at the time) took some pictures as well, they turned out pretty good, hey?
I watched you perform recently and you look like your really loving the new music you’re playing, how have the crowds been receiving the The New Romatiques?

Well I must say after some inner debate over several months I’m just gonna put out the new music as Juliette Lewis. It makes the change less complicated and gives me endless freedom on any musical direction I might want to go in the future.

Why did you put The Licks to rest?

I changed the name and band because I wanted to change my sound and I needed players that were good at different things than my old band was. For instance my lead guitar player now has to be more experimental and mood oriented with pedals. My guitar player in the Licks was really good at riffs and playing really melodic rock leads but the new sound is less traditional rock. It’s more diverse and because the Licks had earned a reputation as a real kick ass old school rock sound I felt a name change was in order. So they wouldn’t be misled by the new record also it’s just very hard to keep 5 individuals all interested and growing in the same direction, it’s kind of impossible.

SXSW went well for you, have you had a positive response from your fans and audiences so far?

Audiences have been great, I mean a great live show is a great live show no matter what songs people like and don’t like and I feel the new band and new songs just add more range and diversity to what I was doing before. We play this blues song called ‘Hardloving Woman’ and I didn’t know how people would receive it but it’s now one of my favourite parts in the set. It’s really, really moving and of course deeply personal. So it’s nice when other people respond to that.

Terra Incognita is a dark and atmospheric album, is that want the New Romantiques are all about or is there a lighter side to your sound too?

I wrote the new record Terra Incognita with a friend and my new guitar player Chris Watson, and Omar Rodreguz- Lopez (producer and from Mars Volta) helped arrangements and instrumentation. I also wrote a few songs on piano, I wanted to really explore melody and space and the contrast of sounds and emotion on certain songs and in other places when it explodes it has more meaning.

What inspires your music and legendary stage performances?

I describe my visual style as, “the little prince in a Mad Max world”. I tend to pick up bits and pieces from designers, and in my travels I also do things very economically ‘cause I’m an independent artist so sometimes I can’t always materialize the visions in my head but I will try.

What’s the process you go through when writing your tunes, is it quite a intimate and independent or a group project?

The writing process is always really fun, sometimes I start with 2 chords on piano and melody, sometimes I tell my guitar player a lyric I’m thinking of and we grow a song from there. Suicide Divebombers was born from touring for 2 years and feeling disillusioned. It’s a song I wanted to write for my audience and its ultimately very hopeful. It came from a concept in my head and a riff Chris came up with. ‘Hardlovin Woman’ came about from a single lyric and the fact I always wanted to write a blues song.

Talk me though your next release?

The new record has different aspects of my emotional life and explores these sides to my musical identity. It has everything: heartbreak, celebration, fantasy, anger, hope and disillusionment. I set about wanting to make a full album that explores the contradictory nature of my emotions and life rather than just a collection of songs.

Where you off to now?

The plan is to just tour, tour, tour this and next year. And keep growing! I’m very excited about all of it. My band is eclectic and visually different so its something always meant to be seen, heard and felt live! We are opening up for Cat Power and the Pretenders in the US Aug and Sept then will tour a bunch in the fall in Europe and UK and everywhere else. Next year we will hopefully hit all my favourite festivals!

He's only bloody brilliant.

This gig at Hoxton Bar and Kitchen (courtesy of Popular) was quite very nice also, l did the door and stamped peoples hands whilst intimitantly poppin my head in to catch a glimpse of who was havin a sing song every now and then. Amanda Blank performed like a pro and the supporting acts were equally on form, l had shallots of fun.

EDIE SEDGWICK by Patti Smith (taken from seventh Heaven)

I don't know how she did it. Fire
She was shaking all over. It took
her hours to put her make-up on.
But she did it. Even the false eye-lashes.
She ordered gin with triple
limes. Then a limosine. Everyone
knew she was the real heroine of
Blonde on Blonde.
oh it isn't fair
oh it isn't fair
how her ermine hair
turned men around
she was white on white
so blonde on blonde
and her long long legs
how I used to beg
to dance with her
but I never had
a chance with her
oh it isn't fair
how her ermine hair
used to swing so nice
used to cut the air
how all the men
used to dance with her
I never got a chance with her
though I really asked her
down deep
where you do
really dream
in the mind
reading love
I'd get
inside
her move
and we'd
turn around
and she'd
turn around
and turn the head
of everyone in town
her shaking shaking
glittering bones
second blonde child
after brian jones
oh it isn't fair

how I dreamed of her
and she slept
and she slept
forever
and I'll never dance
with her no never
she broke down
like a baby
like a baby girl
like a lady
with ermine hair
oh it isn't fair
and I'd like to see
her rise again
her white white bones
with baby brian jones
baby brian jones
like blushing
baby dolls

bellissimo

thoughts

I’d been there for a few weeks by now. Long enough to realise what l’d done and how l’d come to be here. I remember the day my pa dropped me off. I said bye to all my girlfriends and we waved at each other as l was driven away, l cried a bit but it wasn’t real. Sill kinda exciting, l was finally getting the attention l’d craved for the past few years. I’d desperately tried to avoid this before, the first day they took me away l cried all the way there and begged them not to make me go, to save me until l was blue in the face and screaming. Even when they knew, they never really knew. When they found my secret stash in the dark sad little draw next my bed l couldn’t pretend anymore, l thought l couldn’t, but l did. I had carried on the way l’d come until l came to where l sat all alone now, all alone again in this small room. I used to listen to the cars drive by, the wind, the leaves scratch the window and the children walk home from school and wished, l dreamed of being all of them, any of them, anything but this, but me. No one else was around now. When l was left to sit here l just had my own sodden pale self to stare down at. A stale, ugly lump l needed to tear off my bones and hide away. I was, l still am, so ashamed. But at this time, past, l was forced to accept it and care for it. I would wash and eat and dress it like anyone else. In this place there was no escape from the one person l cant stand. Me. When l thought no one could hear l would jump up and down, run in circles, climb the walls, scream into my pillow, cut and cry. Then quietly clear up my mess, compose myself, open the door and leave these secrets until it was safe to come back to, alone.
The walks were my favourite. We would all bundle up, l remember how much the cold used to nip at my purple tipped fingers and dented toes as we were led out on a circuit around the village, always the same route, conversations, houses and attention. I wasn’t embarrassed any more now though, when they looked at me it made me feel alive and reminded me l wasn’t invisible, l knew when we walked back through the doors l became just another again, as always. I’d stare at one of them in front, think about how much flesh and fat was cushioning them from the outside world, how much did they really need, then l’d look down at myself, the sad sight l beheld and realise this wasn’t going to change. l lost myself.

humpday

i took my pa to watch the preview screening of 'Humpday' at Soho house last week. It is absolutely superb: simple plot-line centered around two estranged best friends that fall head first into a drunken macho bet to curate and star in an amateur porn film for the local 'HUMPFEST art fair' some local lesbians let them in on. Its every bit as good as it sounds.

stuff goin on

E.E. Cummings poem, 'Maggie and Milly and Molly and May'

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea
